Make it safe first: do not use switches, flames or anything that sparks, open doors and windows, turn the gas off at the meter if you can do so safely, and leave if the smell is strong or anyone feels unwell. Call 000 if it is life-threatening, then call ATCO to report the leak. ATCO run the WA gas network.

Can you smell gas right now?

Do not use switches, flames, or anything that sparks. Open doors and windows, turn the gas off at the meter if you can do so safely, leave the area, and call us from outside. If the smell is strong or anyone feels unwell, call 000.

How we find a gas leak

We pressure-test the system and use leak-test solution and electronic detection to pinpoint where gas is escaping, rather than guessing.

Pressure test

We isolate the gas line and watch the pressure. If it drops, the system is not holding, which confirms there is a leak to track down.

Leak-test solution

A safe testing solution brushed onto joints and fittings bubbles wherever gas is escaping, pinpointing the exact spot.

Electronic detector

A calibrated detector sniffs out escaping gas along the line and around appliances, including small leaks that are hard to smell.

Appliance check

We check each connected appliance and its connection, since the leak is sometimes at the appliance rather than the pipework.

A pressure test on the gas line shows whether the system is holding; from there we narrow the leak down to a joint, a line, or an appliance.

ATCO operates the gas network and meter; if the issue is on the network side we will tell you who to contact, and we handle everything on your side of the meter.

Found it: repair, test, and certify

Once located, we isolate and repair the leak, pressure-test the system again, and certify the work, so you know it is genuinely sorted.

A gas leak is not fixed until the repair has been pressure-tested and the system proven gas-tight. We do not leave it at a temporary patch.
