Electrical fault finding: diagnosing the problem fast

When a safety switch keeps tripping or the lights flicker, we track the fault down methodically, tell you what is causing it, and fix it, rather than just resetting it.

What does electrical fault finding involve?

We work back from the symptom to the cause: isolating circuits, testing, and narrowing it down until we find the appliance, cable, or connection at fault.

The short answer: A safety switch that keeps tripping or lights that flicker are symptoms, not the fault. We trace the actual cause methodically and fix it, rather than resetting the board and hoping.

A fault has a cause, and resetting the switch does not remove it. We test methodically so the real problem is found, not guessed at.

Fault finding underpins a lot of our electrical work, and what we find sometimes points to a switchboard or wiring issue.

Tripping, flickering, or buzzing?

A safety switch that trips usually means leakage to earth; flickering lights often mean a loose connection; buzzing can mean a failing fitting. Each points somewhere different.

  • RCD keeps tripping
  • Flickering lights
  • Buzzing fittings
  • Dead circuit

We read the symptoms first. A tripping RCD, a flicker that comes and goes, or a warm switch each tell us where to look.

If a fault appears at the same time each day, that is a clue too, and we use it to track down the cause.

When a fault means something bigger

Sometimes a recurring fault is the system telling you it is tired. We are honest when a repair is a patch and an upgrade is the real fix.

We will always try to fix the fault in front of us, but if the same problem keeps returning we will tell you why and what a lasting fix looks like.

If you have lost power entirely or smell burning, treat it as urgent and see our emergency electrician page.

FAQ

Common fault finding questions

Often an appliance on a timer, like a hot water system or pool pump, or moisture in a circuit. A fault that appears at a set time is a strong clue, and we trace it.
Flickering is commonly a loose connection or a failing fitting or driver. It is worth checking, as a loose connection can overheat.
Yes. That is the job. We isolate and test circuit by circuit to locate hidden faults in wiring, connections, or appliances.
It depends on how long the fault takes to trace, so we are clear on cost before we start. Request a quote and we will sort it.
